Created in 1991, the “Assises Nationales des Déchets” which are held every 2 years in La Baule, have progressively become an event of reference for all those involved in dealing with waste. The first conference largely contributed to the development of the law of July 13, 1992, fixing the three main trends of the national policy for waste management : prioritising clean technologies, recycling and energy optimisation.
Through plenary sessions and workshops industrialists, local communities, government administrations and associations meet to exchange ideas to get rid of taboos, to clear new pathways and to imagine the future.
Beyond industrial waste, the “Assises” have progressively covered related subjects:
Banal industrial waste, waste with low radioactivity, waste from building sites, impact on health and the perception by the general public of waste installations…
The European dimension that we wish to give to the “Assises Nationales des Déchets” appeared to us to be a logical continuation of the preceding editions.
Indeed, at the present time, a large part of the progress concerning the management of waste has originated from international actions and in particular with regards to the Community strategy and various European directives.
In addition the Commission insists on the need for development as a whole, balancing legal, economic, and voluntary incentives in order to achieve the goals as fixed by the Union.
The stakes are high as the “ Parent directive on waste” constitutes the basis of European and national regulations concerning waste.
The management of waste in Europe could largely benefit by sharing experiences between the Member States. The 9th “Assises Nationales des Déchets” will thus be a place of meetings and debates in order to:
reduce the problems linked to the management of waste,
promote alternative solutions,
benefit from the experiments undertaken in the various European countries.
The debates organised in the plenary sessions and technical workshops will contribute to defining the key elements for the improvement of waste management in and Europe.
